엄마 십계 Mother’s ten commandments
제 1은 아이 보는 앞에서 싸우지 말지니 존경도 사라지고 아이 마음의 평화를 깨느니라.
(남편과 싸우거나 친척이나 이웃과 싸우거나 아이 앞에서의 싸움은 절대 금물이다. 아이의 행복은 잔잔한 평화이다. 그것을 휘젓지 말라. 싸우지 않으면 칠 것 같거든 밖에 나가서)
제 2는 아이에게 거짓말을 하지 말지니 적당히 물결 흐르는 대로 살아가는 인간이 되느니라.
(빨간 거짓말이든 해로울 것 없다는 하얀 거짓말이든 아이에게 거짓말을 하지 말라. 아이에게 엄마는 하늘이다. 엄마에게 믿음을 둘 수 없으면 아이는 살 수 없다. 정직하게 말하라)
제 3은 아이의 질문을 피하거나 흘려 넘기지 말지니 아이의 소속감을 흔드는 것이니라.
(질문이 정상적인 아이의 습성이다. 아이의 질문을 성실하게 듣고 정성껏 대답해야 한다. 엄마와 아이의 따뜻한 대화를 통해 아이는 확실한 소속감을 가지고 엄마와 몸이 떨어져 있어도 마음이 연결된다. 아이들 어려운 질문도 최선을 다해 대답하라)
제 4는 남들 보는 앞에서 아이를 꾸짖거나 욕하지 말지니 소심한 인간, 비겁자를 만드느니라.
(남들 보는 앞에서 아이를 때린다면 아주 무식, 욕하고 책망하는 것도 우둔. 기를 죽이면 소심한 인간으로 자란다. 반면 격려와 칭찬은 아이에게 최고의 영양제)
제 5는 아이에게 변덕부리지 말지니 엄마의 한결같음이 최상의 교육이니라.
(가정에서의 규칙, 먼저 한 약속 등이 잘 지켜져야 한다. 오늘 이랬다 내일 저랬다 하는 변덕은 믿음과 판단을 혼란케 한다. 손님 왔을 때나 엄마가 바쁜 시간이나 원칙대로, 약속대로 한결 같아야 한다)
제 6은 아이를 어리다고 얕보지 말지니 신이 창조한 귀중한 인격체니라.
(아이도 하나의 엄한 인격체로 대해야 한다. 아이에 대한 말을 생각 없이 하거나, 함부로 대하거나, 가정의 부록처럼 여겨서는 안 된다. 사람으로서 대접받은 아이가 남을 존중하는 민주 시민으로 성장한다)
제 7은 아이에게 흉한 낯을 보이지 말지니 엄마의 미소는 아이의 천국이니라.
(성난 얼굴, 증오에 찬 얼굴, 괴로워하는 얼굴 등은 아이의 걱정거리, 공포, 불안의 원인이 된다. 차분하고 평화스러운 얼굴, 미소 띈 얼굴은 아이를 천국으로 인도한다)
제 8은 아이를 다른 집 아이와 비교하지 말지니 사람은 하나님이 주신 각자의 특색이 있느니라.
(공부도 성격도 습성도 각개인 에게 주어진 특징과 맛과 장점이 다르다. 그의 적성을 잘 찾아 개발해 주는 것이 부모와 교육자의 역할이다. 누구나 똑같으면 무미건조하다. 서로 다른 점이 있는 것이 사는 재미이다)
제 9는 “안된다!(No!)를 아끼지 말지니 “좋다”(Yes)고만 하는 것은 독약을 먹이는 것과 같으니라.
(아이들 원대로 따라가는 것은 지도가 아니다. 냉정하게 판단하고 옳은 것을 택하게 하는 것이 진정 아이들 위한 엄마이다.)
제 10은 물질만 좋아하는 아이로 만들지 말지니 어려서부터 하나님을 알게 하고 바른 생활과 가치를 가르칠지니라.
(신앙교육은 아이의 일생을 위해 참으로 필요하다. 황금의 노예가 되지 않고 가치 있게 사는 길을 어려서 익혀주어야 한다)
1. Do not quarrel in the presence of your child for respect and peace will vanish from his heart. (Quarreling with your husband, relatives, neighbors and any quarreling in your child’s presence are absolutely forbidden. Calm peace is a child’s happiness. Do not disturb it. If you must quarrel to prevent an urge to rather hit, go outside.)
2. Do not lie to your child for he will carry on with his life by simply going with the flow. (Whether a red lie, or a harmless white lie – do not lie to your child. Mother figure is a heaven to a child. When he cannot put his trust in his mother, he can no longer live. Let your words be truthful.)
3. Do not avoid or be inattentive to your child’s questions for it will agitate his connection to the family. (Asking questions is a natural tendency of a normal child. Be attentive to a child and answer with care. An affectionate conversation between a mother and a child secures a sense of connection for a child and this will keep their hearts intact even when they are apart. Give an answer to the best of your knowledge even when you are asked a difficult question.)
4. Do not rebuke or curse your child in the presence of others for he will grow to be narrow-minded and cowardly. (Beating a child in the presence of others is an ignorant behavior, and cursing and rebuking is an unwise behavior. Dispirited child will grow to be a small-minded person. In contrast, a word of encouragement and praise are the best nutrients to a child.)
5. Do not be an erratic mother to your child for mother’s consistent manner is the best education to children. (Family rules, or prior promises must be conformed consistently. Sporadic observance of the rules will confuse a child’s trust and judgment. Be consistent according to the set principles and promises even at the time a visitor is present or at your busiest hour.)
6. Do not think lightly of your child for he is a precious life form created by God. (A child must also be firmly treated as an individual. Do not speak to him indifferently, do not treat him insensitively, or consider him like an appendage to a book. A child raised with proper treatment as an individual grows to be a democratic citizen having respect for others too.)
7. Do not make an unsightly face to your child for a mother’s smile is a haven to a child. (An angry face, hatred-filled face, and painful face are the cause of a child’s worry, fear and anxiety. A face calm and peaceful, a face full of smile will guide a child to heaven.)
8. Do not compare your child to other children for all men have God-given individualities. (Each one is given different trait, taste and strength concerning his learning abilities, personalities, and habits too. Parents and educators’ role is to find a child’s personal aptitude and to help him develop it. It is not interesting if everyone is alike. Diversity is part of our fun in life.)
9. Be unsparing about having to say “No!” for saying “Yes” all the time is equivalent to poisoning a child. (Going along with a child’s wishes is not a guidance. A mother who truly cares about her child makes a composed judgment of the situation and help a child make the right choice.)
10. Do not make a materialistic person out of your child; rather teach him in his childhood to know God and about an honorable life and value. (An education of faith is indeed necessary for an entire life of a child. Let your child be taught in his early days of the path to a meaningful life devoid of serving gold.)
